Best IAS Coaching Institutes in Delhi (2026): Areas, Fees, Safety

Quick answer

Delhi's main UPSC coaching hubs are Old Rajinder Nagar, Karol Bagh and Mukherjee Nagar. Well-known institutes there include Vajiram & Ravi, Vision IAS, Drishti IAS, Next IAS, Rau's IAS, Chahal Academy and Shankar IAS. One-year offline GS courses listed on official sites cost roughly ₹1-1.95 lakh, so compare fees, batch size and building safety.

  • UPSC CSE Prelims 2027 is scheduled for 23 May 2027, per UPSC's 2027 calendar.
  • Official sites list one-year offline GS course fees from about ₹1 lakh to ₹1.95 lakh (approximate).
  • MCD sealed at least 29 coaching basements after the 27 July 2024 Old Rajinder Nagar flooding.
  • In June 2026 Delhi ordered safety inspections of about 923 coaching centres and announced a regulation law.

Every year, thousands of UPSC aspirants move to Delhi for coaching, and most of them land in one of three neighbourhoods: Old Rajinder Nagar, Karol Bagh or Mukherjee Nagar. This October 2026 guide covers the hubs, well-known institutes, approximate GS course fees and what has changed on safety since the July 2024 basement flooding in Old Rajinder Nagar. There is no official ranking of coaching institutes, so treat any “number one” claim with caution.

When is the next UPSC Civil Services exam?

According to UPSC’s calendar for 2027, the Civil Services Examination (CSE) notification is due on 13 January 2027, applications close on 2 February 2027, the Preliminary exam is on 23 May 2027 and Mains begins on 20 August 2027. UPSC notes that these dates can be changed, so confirm them on upsc.gov.in.

Prelims has two objective papers: GS Paper I, which decides merit, and CSAT, which is qualifying at 33 percent. Mains has seven merit papers plus two qualifying language papers, followed by a personality test.

Timing matters for coaching: most one-year GS foundation batches run 10 to 11 months, so a batch starting around now ends close to Prelims 2027. If you are aiming for 2028, a two-year programme or a later batch may suit you better.

Where are the UPSC coaching hubs in Delhi?

Old Rajinder Nagar and Karol Bagh

The stretch of Pusa Road between Rajendra Place and Karol Bagh metro stations, along with the lanes of Old Rajinder Nagar, has the densest cluster of English-medium GS and optional-subject classes in the city. The area is packed with PGs, self-study libraries and bookshops, and Karol Bagh metro (Blue Line) is the usual landmark in institute addresses.

Mukherjee Nagar

Mukherjee Nagar in North Delhi, near the GTB Nagar and Vishwavidyalaya metro stations on the Yellow Line, is the older hub. It has a strong Hindi-medium community and many test-series centres, libraries and PGs.

Other areas

Some institutes also run centres elsewhere, for example Rau’s IAS lists a Connaught Place centre in addition to Old Rajinder Nagar. Katwaria Sarai in South Delhi is another coaching cluster named in the government’s 2026 safety inspections.

How much does a GS foundation course cost?

Fees change every year and differ by batch, medium and format, so the figures below are approximate. They come from each institute’s own website or fee leaflet. Always check the institute’s site for the current fee, GST and refund terms.

  • Vajiram & Ravi: about ₹1,80,000 for its 11-month GS prelims-cum-mains programme for 2027 (about ₹1,95,000 with CSAT), offline or live online; its two-year programme for 2028 is listed at about ₹2,45,000 offline and ₹2,25,000 online.
  • Rau’s IAS: its fee leaflet lists about ₹1,75,500 for the offline GS Integrated Foundation and about ₹95,500 for the live-online version, including GST. The leaflet is undated, so confirm before applying.
  • Shankar IAS Academy: its Delhi page lists the GS prelims-cum-mains course at about ₹1,00,000 including tax and study material.

We could not find current GS foundation fees on the official pages of Vision IAS, Drishti IAS, Next IAS or Chahal Academy, so we have not quoted any. Ask for a written fee structure at the counter or on the official site.

Online or offline coaching: which suits you?

Offline coaching gives you fixed timings, face-to-face doubt sessions and a peer group, but it means paying Delhi rent on top of fees. Live-online courses from the same institutes are often cheaper (Rau’s online fee is roughly half its offline fee) and let you stay at home.

A middle path is self-study or an online course plus a test series. If you move to Delhi, you can join a library and test series first and decide on a classroom programme later.

What changed on safety after the July 2024 basement tragedy?

On 27 July 2024, heavy rain flooded the basement library of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar, and three civil services aspirants drowned. In August 2024 the CBI took over the investigation on the Delhi High Court’s orders.

In the days that followed, the MCD sealed at least 29 coaching basements, mostly in Old Rajinder Nagar but also in Mukherjee Nagar and other areas, saying they were being used in violation of building bye-laws. Earlier, in January 2024, the Union Ministry of Education had issued guidelines for coaching centres covering registration, at least one square metre of space per student, fire and building safety certificates, and pro-rata fee refunds within 10 days if a student leaves mid-course.

In June 2026 the Delhi government set up a committee headed by the Director of Higher Education to draft a regulatory framework for coaching centres covering fees, building and fire safety, grievance redressal and student welfare. The education minister ordered inspections of about 923 coaching centres in Mukherjee Nagar, Rajinder Nagar and Katwaria Sarai, and said repeat violators would be sealed. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta gave centres one month to meet safety norms and said a law to regulate coaching centres would come soon. As of our last check, we could not confirm that this law has been passed, so watch for official updates.

What does it cost to live near the coaching hubs?

Reliable, current rent data for these areas is scarce. A PTI report from July 2024 quoted aspirants saying a ground- or upper-floor room in the coaching hubs cost at least ₹25,000 to ₹30,000 a month, while basement rooms cost about ₹15,000 to ₹20,000. Compare listings in person, as rents have likely changed. For safety reasons, avoid basement rooms and libraries, check for ventilation, two exits and working fire extinguishers, and get a written rent agreement.

How do I choose the right coaching institute?

  1. Decide your target year and medium (English or Hindi) first, then shortlist only institutes with batches that fit both.
  2. Attend a demo class or watch the institute’s free lectures to judge the teaching style.
  3. Ask for the written fee structure, GST, instalment options and refund policy before paying anything.
  4. Check batch size; Rau’s, for example, says its offline batches are capped at about 100 students, while online batches are larger.
  5. Confirm what is included: study material, test series, answer-writing evaluation, mentoring and CSAT.
  6. Visit the classroom building and check exits, fire safety equipment, ventilation and that classes are not held in a basement.
  7. Speak to current students rather than relying on toppers’ photos and advertisements.
  8. Compare the offline fee plus a year of Delhi rent against the online option from the same institute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Live-online versions are sometimes cheaper. These figures are approximate and change often, so check the institute’s site before paying.

Is Old Rajinder Nagar or Mukherjee Nagar better for UPSC preparation?

Neither is automatically better. Old Rajinder Nagar and the Karol Bagh side of Pusa Road host many English-medium GS and optional classes, while Mukherjee Nagar in North Delhi is a long-established hub with a large Hindi-medium community. Pick the area closest to the classes you actually join, and inspect rooms and libraries for safety.

Do I need coaching to clear the UPSC exam?

Coaching is not mandatory, and the syllabus, previous papers and NCERT books are freely available. Many aspirants use coaching for structure, answer-writing practice and test series, while others rely on self-study plus online resources. Decide based on your discipline, budget and how much guidance you need.

What is the age limit and number of attempts for UPSC CSE?

As per recent CSE notifications, a general or EWS candidate must be 21 to 32 years old and gets six attempts. OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates get relaxation up to 35 years and nine attempts, and SC/ST candidates up to 37 years with no cap on attempts within the age limit. Read the latest notification on upsc.gov.in for your exact category rules.

Are basement classrooms and libraries allowed in Delhi now?

After the July 2024 tragedy, the MCD sealed dozens of coaching basements it said were being used in violation of building bye-laws. In June 2026 the Delhi government ordered fresh safety inspections of coaching centres and said non-compliant centres would be sealed. Avoid any classroom, library or room in a basement and ask for the building’s fire safety clearance.
